Not only am I a fan of single malt scotch, I’m also a fan of creative design.  The Highland Park 50 Year Old (£10,500; roughly $16,800) takes both of these to a whole new level.  Sparing no expense for this anniversary edition, it arrives in a hand-carved oak box with Sterling silver portholes to give you a glimpse of it’s unique handmade bottle inside.  The bottle is encased in an intricate weave of Sterling silver protecting that precious mahogany colored whiskey, rich and spicy tannins… alright, I’m starting to drool.

They only made 275 bottles of fine drink so if you’ve got a ridiculous amount of money you should grab one of these before they’re gone…. or get one for me.  More pictures after the jump.

Bottled at 44.8% abv, Highland Park 50 year old is a vatting of five refill oak casks distilled in 1960. Its natural mahogany colour, rich and spicy tannins, and muscovado sugar flavours makes this Highland Park single malt an exceptionally fine whisky that builds on the world-class reputation of its award-winning distillery.

Augmented reality is growing in popularity but this is by far the best display I’ve seen.  For the new Adidas sneakers, the company has embedded codes in their tongues, which enables you to open up an online world via webcam at the Adidas website.  This is great advertising and product design!

Sure it may just look like a pad of paper with a black border and a grey dot where there would be a button, but the Notepod+ ($20) is way more than that.  It features zero bezel, infinite battery life and doubles as a mouse pad.  Basically its a GUI-sketching heaven for app developers

Are you tired of GPS and want to go back to using paper maps?  Probably not but this is still a cool design.  It’s the map²( $13) and it has four quadrants that you can zoom in on (unfold…) to enlarge for more detail.  To be honest I think it would be really cool for touristy type stuff but other than that I think I’ll stick with  Google Maps on my phone.  I know… I’m a hater.

As we’ve seen over the last couple months there’s a lot of crap out there.  However, this is one of those things that I consider revolutionary.  Designed for the visually impaired its a perfect example of form and function. (excuse me while I geek out a bit)

British designer Andrew Mitchell has devised a portable Braille interface called “Squibble” that provides tactile, audio and high contrast visual feedback for the blind, allowing users to access their mobile phones and other technology anytime, anywhere. Regardless of where it is used, the Squibble gives the chance for personal interaction as well as freedom, as it neatly fits into a pocket and connects via Bluetooth. Moreover, it tries to negate the stigma of assisted products and provides a stylish and desirable solution for a market segment that is often neglected.

Designed to maximize the internal space, using an external metal chassis to maintain rigidity, the Squibble uses 779 ultrasonic motors to provide tactile feedback through Braille and other universally recognizable symbols for quick access. Providing illumination through caps on each motor, the device also includes a grip that lets the blind read Braille without placing the device on a surface. When the caps press against the user-replaceable silicone cover, they provide illumination for each of the raised dots.

Sometimes there’s those things that you nerd out on, the Pocket Clip Pencil ($8) is one for me.  It’s such a simple addition (or subtraction in this case) to make something even more versatile. Very cool!

Possibly the worlds cleverest pencil, handmade in east London. Each white pencil has a clip carved into it, so that it can be attached to pockets, satchels and book covers just like a biro. It comes packaged on a card and we think it’s a classic in the making!

Though I’m a Dr. Pepper man myself, I’m still a fan off good design.  I’ve also always been a big supporter of “less is more” , not too mention green design and think this is a perfect example.  This is the Colorless Coke Can designed by Harc Lee. Below is a note from the designer.

A convex logo substitutes colorfully sprayed can. Naked can help to reduce air and water pollution occurred in its coloring process. It also reduces energy and effort to separate toxic color paint from aluminum in recycling process. Huge amount of energy and paint required to manufacture colored cans will be saved. Instead of toxic paint, manufacturers process aluminum with a pressing machine that indicates brand identity on surface.
