The most energy efficient light bulb ever

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Well, I may be stretching that a bit given that it’s actually a candle but this Light Bulb Candle designed by Helbert FerreiraRemi Melander of System Design STUDIO is a sweet piece of work.  It screws into a standard socket and looks like a real bulb.  Probably wouldn’t work in a ceiling fixture.  Well I guess it would, you’ll probably just burn your house down.

A lamp made from wax. Impossible!

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Actually not… The Impossible Lamp by Jeeves Basu has been designed so that it initially melts to create the shade but after the shade has formed it doesn’t melt anymore.  Crazy, I know!

Switch on a lamp made of wax and it should melt and disintegrate in seconds. But due to the unique way it has been designed, the Impossible Lamp does not. It is a lamp made of wax that works without melting.

Check out a video of this thing in action after the break. Read More

BoxLight — Ink cartridge lamps

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

These are awesome.  Such a better use than just trashing your used ink cartridges.  You can get your own Ink-Cartridge Chandelier ($150) from the BoxLight Etsy store.

The translucent cartridges look fantastic as a hanging lamp. Each of these is carefully cracked open, dremel-ed, drilled, wired up, and turned into a glowing box of light! Great gifts for graphic designers or anyone in visual arts. Available colors include matte black, cyan, light-cyan, magenta, light-magenta, yellow, light-black, and light-light-black.

Meet Pumplight, The Inflatable Desk Lamp

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

This is an awesome desk lamp.  It’s called the Pumplight by Pega Design and its brightness is controlled by a pump (hence the name) like nurses us when they’re taking your blood pressure.  So what happens is when you pump it the balloon gets bigger and acts like the lamp shade therefore making it brighter.  Then when you open the air valve it gets smaller and the light dims till it goes out.

Cool Design!

Collapsible lampshade is built with lasers. PewPew!

Collapsible lampshade seems impossible, built with lasers

This lampshade is awesome even though it’s not as simple as that Egg Carton Lampshade I think it’s more impressive.  Even more impressive than the final product is the way this unusual lampshade was created:

“The process works by sweeping a laser across a pan of powdered nylon; when the lasers hit the nylon, it fuses (“sinters”). The process repeats in layers, until the final product emerges. Thus, you can create interlocking shapes all at once–for example, a chain whose links are completely closed.”

Take a look at this video after the break and you’ll see how it unfurls: Read More
