LG Expo: A phone with a projector

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

340x_lgexpo

“Chubbs”, “Fatty Ass”, “Fugly” — call it what you want, but the LG Expo ($200) is a smartphone with an appendage a secret: a $180 DLP pico projector that straps to its back.  Apart from the optional rear monstrosity, which can display big-sceen size images from up to 8 feet away, the Expo pretty packed with good stuff, it’s the first US phone with a 1GHz processor, a 3.2-inch touchscreen, a 5 megapixel camera with flash, a slide-out keyboard, 7.2 Mbps HSPA wireless, microSD storage, and Windows Mobile 6.5.

Is HTC bringing Android 2.1 to the Hero?

Monday, November 30th, 2009

hero-android21

After the Droid launched on Verizon running Android 2.0 we were all asking the question, “When will the Hero get the update?”  Well HTC promised us an Android 2.0-based firmware for the Hero line once it figured out the nitty gritty details of porting Sense to Googles latest code, leapfrogging Donut altogether — but now, it looks like theyre gonna do one better.

Screenshots found today show a Hero running Android 2.1, which would dovetail nicely with the fact that Google had teased a “minor update” to 2.0 before the end of 2009 back when it announced Eclair last month. The interface looks largely untouched from 1.5, proof that HTC was able to bring Sense up to speed with minimum drama; its unclear when thisll all be available, but considering that Sprints version just got a super-minor update, some carrier-branded versions could be in for a wait.

Samsung Unveils Android OS Galaxy i5700 Spica

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

It’s seems like there is a new Android phone announced every week now.  I’m completely OK with that too.  This little beauty has been dubbed the Galaxy i5700 Spica and adds to Samsung’s Android lineup.  The Galaxy Spica will be available in Europe, Middle East, and Asia.

For tech stuff it sports an 800 MHz processor, is 13.2mm thick, supports DivX and has a 3.5mm headphone jack.  I’m not sure the screen resolution yet but Android seems to be working with new screen sizes a lot better now.

The Spica looks to round out Samsungs offering, with the Galaxy, Sprint Samsung Moment, and the T-Mobile Behold2.  In HTC Windows Mobile comparison, the Galaxy will probably be the WinMo HTC Diamond2 equivalent, the Moment is comparable to the Touch Pro2 with the hardware keyboard, the Behold2 would be an Imagio competitor, and the Galaxy Spica may be the Touch2s closest match.

Sprint Hero at Best Buy

I first heard about this on Boy Genius Report‘s twitter feed. (follow BGR) so I had to check into it myself.  It’s true!  Best Buy is now offering the HTC Hero for $99 with a new 2 year contract with Sprint.  So what about us that have already bought the Hero?  Well if you bought it from Best Buy they will give you a refund as long as you bring in your receipt.

There hasn’t been any word if Sprint will be offering the discount directly.

HTC You ad campaign: A phone that gets you

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

you

You don’t need to get a phone. You need a phone that gets you.  That’s a line from HTC’s new “quetly brilliant” campaign.  They have definitely been a major name for Windows Mobile users for a while now, but it looks like the company’s gearing up to go mainstream — this is the first print ad from the new HTC You campaign that launched on Monday. Considering HTC’s recent slew of high-profile handset launches like the HeroHD2, and Tilt2 and equally-promising upcoming products like the Dragon and Droid Eris, we’d say this marketing push hasn’t come a moment too soon. As for the ad itself, while it’s not exactly a knockdown punch, it certainly suggests that HTC sees Sense UI as its ace in the hole — we’ll see how that plays out as Android 2.0 phones like the Motorola Droid come out and make stock Android sexy again.

Google Maps Finally Gets Turn-by-Turn

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

I’ve been saying for years that Google Maps should have turn by turn.  Well today my dream came true.   With Google and Verizon Wireless announcing the Motorola Droid, Google has announced the new Google Maps Navigation, which will give turn-turn driving directions, traffic information from multiple sources, voice search that includes soft searches, and layers of traffic and visual data, not to mention getting watching where you go through Street View. The price? Free.  So you say this must be too good to be true.  In a way it is. At this time, Google Maps with voice guidance is limited to Android 2.0.
