Google to demo Chrome OS tomorrow

We first told you about Google’s Chrome OS this summer and I have to say, I’m pretty excited for tomorrow.  Google releasing an operating system is worthy of getting excited about, of course, but the mystification comes from not really know anything about what it will do or what features it will have. About the only information available right now is that the Google Chrome OS will be a cloud-based operating system, which will probably make it an excellent fit for light-weight machines like netbooks and nettops. Otherwise? We don’t know jack.

Looks like that will all change tomorrow. A press event will be hosted at Google’s Mountain View Campus on Thursday morning, billed as an “update on progress with Google Chrome OS.”

According to the invitation, Google’s vice president of Product Management, Sundar Pichai, will be speaking, along with Google’s engineering director for Chrome OS, Matthew Papakipos. Demos of the operating system will be shown and Google will give an overview of their launch plans for 2010. There’s even a possibility that we’ll see one of those famous early Google betas we all love so well.

Whether Google Chrome OS is going to be a major push or just a side engineering project remains to be seen, but we’ll all be waiting with anticipation to see what Google’s little operating system can actually do. My guess is we’ll be impressed.

Google Announces Google Chrome OS [Breaking News]

We just received a tweet from Google with breaking news.

google Introducing the Google Chrome OS http://bit.ly/N1rNZ

Google designed Google Chrome for people who live on the web — searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends. However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, Google is announcing a new project that’s a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It’s Google’s attempt to re-think what operating systems should be.

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We’re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don’t have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.

Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from Android. Android was designed from the beginning to work across a variety of devices from phones to set-top boxes to netbooks. Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems. Later this year Google will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010.

We are definitely excited to see where this leads over the next couple weeks!  Check out Google’s full post here.
