Meet the Sony Dash: An alarm clock on steroids

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

It seems CES is all about tablets this year and here’s one that definitely caught my attention.  It’s the Dash Internet Viewer ($199) by Sony.  It’s a touchscreen WiFi device that you prop up like a digital photo frame. It’s pretty cool because it’s an alarm clock on steroids.  With a 7-inch touch screen you can access over 1,000 free Internet apps, including news, calendars, weather, sports, social networking and more.  The Dash utilizes an existing home wireless connection to continuously deliver Internet content to its viewers.  A negative that I see is that it doesn’t have an internal battery so that means it’s not portable.  Not a deal breaker but I think I would want to be able to move it around.

Plans are to have this little guy shipping in April so I’m going to add this to my wish list.

The HP Slate Announced. It’s Hot!

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

I’m following Steve Ballmer on Engadgets “live” feed and he just showed off a new tablet.  It’s the HP Slate and it looks hot!  I think at the same time he said it they launched press pics online.  It’s slated (haha get it…) to hit the market later this year.

There’s a nice little teaser after the break. Read More

Meet Joojoo, formerly CrunchPad

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

With all of the drama unfolding over the last week with Michael Arrington’s Crunch Pad and promised law suits, I didn’t expect to see this.  Fusion Garage told their side of the story saying that they never had a contract and that FG owned all of the intellectual property.  Crazy, I know!

Well those of us that still wanted the Crunch Pad to live got our wish.  The new Arrington-free version is called the Joojoo and will retail for $499 not the wishfull $300. It’s pretty much the same thing as we heard about the Crunch Pad: it runs a UNIX-based OS, boots straight to a web browser (9 second boot time) so since it’s web based there aren’t any local apps.  It has a 12.1 capacitive touchscreen and weighs about 2.4 pounds.  Under the hood there’s a 4GB SSD, WiFi (no 3G), an accelerometer and about 5 hours of battery life.

So when can you get it? Fusion Garage plans to ship devices about 8-10 weeks after preorders, which start this friday.  Like we satated before the pricetag is $499 and we’d of course be very happy if it were down at $300 or $400, but it’s basically a new device in a new market, and you’ll have to hand over a little extra for being an early adopter.
