Is Bing Maps trying to out-do Google Maps?

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Microsoft’s Bing Maps for the desktop–and soon for Windows Mobile–seems to be taking on Google Maps and doing it well.  They already have some features in place such as the “Bird’s Eye” viewing feature that I like a lot.  Over the next couple months Bing Maps will be getting some new local features so consumers can explore their neighborhoods, upload photos and have them stitched together, and have an interactive experience with the Bing Maps interface.  So will it be better than Google Maps?

Tell us your thoughts, you can explore some of these new features at http://www.bing.com/maps/explore/.

Strike 1 for me is that it doesn’t work in Google Chrome.

Update: Stefan @bing let me know that it was an issue with not having Silverlight.  Installed and now it works beautifully in Chrome.  No more strikes…

Google Chrome Features in a “Blow your mind” video

First off I’ll start by saying that I’m a huge fan of Google Chrome.

Second, this video is incredible.  Not only does it blow my freakn’ mind, but it’s one of the best productions I’ve ever seen.  It was done by Google UK and there are no “special effect” or post production effects.  Everything was built by hand and shot live.

Whats that? Did you just call me a liar?  Fine… check out the Making of Chrome Features after the break. Read More

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Still looking for gift ideas and your a cheap bastard? (not to mention lazy since there’s only one day left)  Why not gift wrap google Chrome and give the gift of super fast browsing.  Google built a nice little site to help rid everyone of that evil browser we call IE.

Google Chrome is so simple to use, even your grandma will love it.

Google Chrome Hits Beta for Mac and Windows Kids Get Extensions

It’s a good day for Mac and Linux users.  Google has announce an official beta for their popular Chrome browser.   Those of us that aren’t cool enough to own a Mac get a surprise too.  Google is finally launching extensions for Chrome with support for Windows and Linux versions of the browser.  Sorry Mac kids, you have to wait…

There are already 300 extensions available so that’s pretty cool.  From what I can tell there isn’t a big lag after installing either.  I was really worried about that because Firefox is soooooo slow with extensions installed.

Google to demo Chrome OS tomorrow

google-chrome-os

We first told you about Google’s Chrome OS this summer and I have to say, I’m pretty excited for tomorrow.  Google releasing an operating system is worthy of getting excited about, of course, but the mystification comes from not really know anything about what it will do or what features it will have. About the only information available right now is that the Google Chrome OS will be a cloud-based operating system, which will probably make it an excellent fit for light-weight machines like netbooks and nettops. Otherwise? We don’t know jack.

Looks like that will all change tomorrow. A press event will be hosted at Google’s Mountain View Campus on Thursday morning, billed as an “update on progress with Google Chrome OS.”

According to the invitation, Google’s vice president of Product Management, Sundar Pichai, will be speaking, along with Google’s engineering director for Chrome OS, Matthew Papakipos. Demos of the operating system will be shown and Google will give an overview of their launch plans for 2010. There’s even a possibility that we’ll see one of those famous early Google betas we all love so well.

Whether Google Chrome OS is going to be a major push or just a side engineering project remains to be seen, but we’ll all be waiting with anticipation to see what Google’s little operating system can actually do. My guess is we’ll be impressed.

Google Announces Google Chrome OS [Breaking News]

We just received a tweet from Google with breaking news.

google Introducing the Google Chrome OS http://bit.ly/N1rNZ

Google designed Google Chrome for people who live on the web — searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends. However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, Google is announcing a new project that’s a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It’s Google’s attempt to re-think what operating systems should be.

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We’re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don’t have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.

Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from Android. Android was designed from the beginning to work across a variety of devices from phones to set-top boxes to netbooks. Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems. Later this year Google will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010.

We are definitely excited to see where this leads over the next couple weeks!  Check out Google’s full post here.
