JooJoo ship date gets pushed to March 25

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Well it’s the end of February and the JooJoo tablet that I’ve been drooling over still hasn’t shipped.  Yesterday Fusion Garage sent out a press release letting everyone know that shipping will be delayed to March 25th because of a manufacturing issue with the screen.  This now means that the JooJoo and the iPad will be launching in the same week.  (could be interesting)  Because of the delay Fusion Garage has promised a free accessory to pre-order customers because of their wait.  Our guess is it will be the $30 stand pictured above.  Anyway I can’t wait to get my hands on one of these.

Meet Joojoo, formerly CrunchPad

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

With all of the drama unfolding over the last week with Michael Arrington’s Crunch Pad and promised law suits, I didn’t expect to see this.  Fusion Garage told their side of the story saying that they never had a contract and that FG owned all of the intellectual property.  Crazy, I know!

Well those of us that still wanted the Crunch Pad to live got our wish.  The new Arrington-free version is called the Joojoo and will retail for $499 not the wishfull $300. It’s pretty much the same thing as we heard about the Crunch Pad: it runs a UNIX-based OS, boots straight to a web browser (9 second boot time) so since it’s web based there aren’t any local apps.  It has a 12.1 capacitive touchscreen and weighs about 2.4 pounds.  Under the hood there’s a 4GB SSD, WiFi (no 3G), an accelerometer and about 5 hours of battery life.

So when can you get it? Fusion Garage plans to ship devices about 8-10 weeks after preorders, which start this friday.  Like we satated before the pricetag is $499 and we’d of course be very happy if it were down at $300 or $400, but it’s basically a new device in a new market, and you’ll have to hand over a little extra for being an early adopter.

RIP CrunchPad. Sorry we never met :(

rip-crunchpad

One of my major obsessions over the last year has been the CrunchPad, a pet project by Michael Arrington.  Sadly yesterday he reveled on TechCrunch that CrunchPad is dead.

“It was so close I could taste it.”

That’s how Arrington started to tell the story of it’s a tragic end, as the tablet computer Crunchpad is in the Deadpool now.

The  unfortunate end to CrunchPad is not due to some technical issues or financial problems but the end is a result of greed, jealousy and miscommunication as told by Arrington. Crux of the story- Partner company Fusion Garage no longer wanted to go along with TechCrunch and wanted to sell CrunchPad on their own, under their own banner. Arringoton says that both TechCrunch and Fusion Garage hold the intellectual property of CrunchPad and TechCrunch solely holds the CrunchPad trademark. So, TechCrunch plans to file multiple lawsuits against Fusion Garage and its stake holders. (Read the full melodramatic story here in detail by Arrington). The nature of the law suites is yet to be made public.
