Dan Hesse Continues to Impress.

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

Engadget has a great, allbeit short, story about Sprint’s Dan Hesse.  He told GigaOM

“We have so much spectrum that we decided to do tests so in case we have multi-modal phones with other air interfaces, we can add LTE on top of WiMAX and run both networks,”.

This quote really epitomizes the vision that I think Dan Hesse is trying to create.  Want a huge touchscreen phone?  Here’s your EVO.  Want a Keyboard?  Here’s your EPIC 4G.  Versatility is the key to surviving in a market that is always changing.  Sprint is the third largest carrier in the US.  Now that normally means that it doesn’t get to dictate where the market goes, but in this case Mr. Hesse is actually side-stepping what everyone else is doing and creating his own market.  The question is, is he going to be Tesla or Edison?

Sprint Palm Pixi now $50

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

If you’re in the market for an upgrade now might be a good time.  Sprint has dropped the price of the original WiFi-less Palm Pixi to $49.99 (after $100 mail-in rebate and a new two-year contract)  This is probably because Verizon has the Pixi Plus with WiFi for $79.99.  Now I’m not a huge fan of the Pixi, mainly due to the screen size and the buttons but WebOS is pretty sweet.  It should be a good deal if you’re tying to jump into the smartphone market.  Now we’ll have to watch for a price drop on Sprint’s Palm Pre so that it can compete with the Pre Plus on Verizon.

Verizon Wireless cutting plan prices?

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

New plans on the horizon for Verizon.  Get it?  Man I’m hilarious…

Anyway, there’s been a lot of buzz today about Big Red cutting their plan prices.  This is something that would put them a little more in line with other carries and their unlimited plans.  Boy Genius Report broke the story/rumor today highlighting a 30% drop in pricing on the unlimited minutes options for some of the plans.  Another big change is the data plans where among the changes they now have $29.99 unlimited data. (that’s included in the Sprint plans)  I guess there gearing up for more Android phones like the Nexus One.

The pictures after the break highlight the new plans and compare them to other carriers.  It still looks like Sprint has the best pricing.  How does this effect you? Read More

AT&T finally gets in the Android game

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

It’s been a big week for Android with the release of the new Nexus One and it just got a lot more interesting.  AT&T announced that it’s launching five new Android devices in the first half of 2010.  They will be devices from Motorola, Dell and HTC.  They say the Motorola phone is exclusive to them so that counts out Droid so it could be the new Backflip and Dell announced that the Mini 3 is coming to AT&T so we know that one.  So that leaves HTC.  Could they be some of the devices we saw in their leaked road map?  AT&T says they’ll have an “exclusive” device so I’m curious if it really will be or if it will just be something re-shelled like the Hero on Sprint.

So lets hear it AT&T peeps.  What do you think?

HTC You ad campaign: A phone that gets you

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

you

You don’t need to get a phone. You need a phone that gets you.  That’s a line from HTC’s new “quetly brilliant” campaign.  They have definitely been a major name for Windows Mobile users for a while now, but it looks like the company’s gearing up to go mainstream — this is the first print ad from the new HTC You campaign that launched on Monday. Considering HTC’s recent slew of high-profile handset launches like the HeroHD2, and Tilt2 and equally-promising upcoming products like the Dragon and Droid Eris, we’d say this marketing push hasn’t come a moment too soon. As for the ad itself, while it’s not exactly a knockdown punch, it certainly suggests that HTC sees Sense UI as its ace in the hole — we’ll see how that plays out as Android 2.0 phones like the Motorola Droid come out and make stock Android sexy again.
